New Alberta Traffic Fines Took Effect March 13, 2026

The Government of Alberta increased fines under the Traffic Safety Act in March 2026, with most common offences rising about 30% and high-risk driving offences jumping 50%.

What changed

High-risk offences see the steepest increases

Speeding penalties now scale up sharply: $324 for 30 km/h over, $560 for 40 km/h over, and $744 for 50 km/h over. Drivers caught going more than 50 km/h over the limit will face a mandatory court appearance, with fines set by the court.

These changes apply province-wide and are enforced by Municipal Enforcement and the RCMP. Slow down, put the phone away, and drive safely — for your wallet and for everyone on the road.
